Size & growth
Wendell is now about twice the size of Rolesville. Wendell counted 9,793 residents in the 2020 Census and is estimated at ~19,700 in 2025 — more than doubling since 2020 (about +101%), making it one of North Carolina's fastest-growing towns. Rolesville sits at about 11,297 (2024 Census) and is itself one of Wake County's fastest-growing communities, having more than doubled since 2010.
So both are booming — but Wendell has grown harder and faster, driven by Wendell Falls, a master-planned community entitled for up to 4,000 homes. Rolesville still feels like a small, quiet bedroom town; Wendell increasingly feels like a full-scale suburb with its own town-center amenities.
Location & commute
The two towns point at different parts of the region. Wendell sits east of Raleigh on the US-64 corridor; Rolesville sits northeast, closer to Wake Forest.
- Wendell — ~20 miles east of downtown Raleigh, ~25–40 min via US-64/264 Bypass, with WakeMed and east Raleigh on the way in. RDU is ~28 mi and RTP ~30 mi (the far side of the Triangle).
- Rolesville — ~16 miles northeast of downtown, ~25–30 min, typically via Rolesville Road / Louisburg Road (US-401), oriented toward north Raleigh and Wake Forest.
Wendell also has something Rolesville doesn't: fixed-route transit. The GoTriangle ZWX (Zebulon/Wendell–Raleigh Express) went all-day and hourly in November 2025, with a stop at the Wendell Park & Ride downtown and a run to Raleigh Union Station. Both towns are also served by GoWake SmartRide on-demand. See our commute guide for the full breakdown.
Home prices & taxes
On taxes the two are close. Rolesville wins narrowly on the town rate — its $0.40 per $100 is the lowest in this group, versus Wendell's $0.42 (Wendell adopted $0.42 for FY2025–26). Both add the same Wake County rate of $0.5135, so the combined difference on a typical home is modest.
Home prices are broadly comparable. Wendell's median sits around ~$380K (2025), with a steady supply of new construction coming online through Wendell Falls; Rolesville's newer subdivisions land in a similar range. As always, compare current listings for your budget rather than town averages.
Rolesville has the lowest town tax rate of the group, but it's a small edge. Commute direction, amenities, and how much town you want should weigh more than a couple of cents on the rate.
Schools
Same district: both Wendell and Rolesville are in the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS), the largest district in North Carolina, which uses a student-assignment system with magnet and year-round options. You'll be assigned to different individual schools by address, but the district, programs, and policies are identical. Wendell's base-assignment schools include Lake Myra Elementary (inside Wendell Falls), Wendell Middle, and East Wake High. Confirm assignment by exact address; see our schools guide.
Town character
Wendell pairs a historic downtown — home to the long-running Wendell Harvest Festival — with the new identity of Wendell Falls: a master-planned community with the Treelight Square town center and Publix, a zero-entry saltwater pool, a dog park, and 10+ miles of trails. It appeals to buyers who want brand-new, amenity-rich neighborhoods plus a real downtown.
Rolesville is a smaller, residential, family-oriented town — quieter and more bedroom-community in feel, with Main Street and Rolesville Main Street Park at its center and quick access to Wake Forest's amenities. Get a feel for Wendell through things to do or the live dashboard.
