Size & growth
The gap here has nearly closed. Knightdale has roughly 22,000–23,000 residents today versus Wendell's roughly 19,700 (2025 estimate) — but Wendell was just 9,793 in the 2020 Census, meaning it has more than doubled since 2020 (about +101%), making it one of North Carolina's fastest-growing towns. Knightdale is bigger because it started its growth wave earlier; Wendell has been catching up at a faster clip.
The engine behind Wendell's surge is Wendell Falls, a master-planned community entitled for up to 4,000 homes with 273 acres of parks and open space, the Treelight Square town center (anchored by a Publix), a community center, pool, dog park, and 10+ miles of trails. Practically, both feel like fast-growing east-Wake suburbs — Knightdale is a bit more built-out today; Wendell has more brand-new construction coming online.
Location & commute
Wendell sits just east of Knightdale on US-64/US-264, so Knightdale is literally between Wendell and Raleigh. That makes Knightdale a few minutes closer to downtown — Wendell drivers pass through the Knightdale corridor on the way in.
- Wendell — ~16–20 miles to downtown Raleigh, ~25–30 minutes via the US-64/264 Bypass (longer in rush hour).
- Knightdale — ~12 miles to downtown Raleigh, ~20–25 minutes, since it's closer in.
Both share the same US-64 commute into Raleigh and the I-540 connection toward the north and west Triangle. If shaving a few minutes off the commute matters most, Knightdale has the edge by virtue of being closer in; if you want newer housing and you don't mind the extra few minutes, Wendell wins. See our commute guide for honest rush-hour drive times.
Shared transit
One of the nice things about choosing between these two: you don't have to choose on transit, because they largely share it.
- GoTriangle ZWX (Zebulon/Wendell–Raleigh Express) — went all-day, hourly on Nov 9, 2025, running from the Wendell Park & Ride (7 N Oakwood Ave) and Wendell Falls through to WakeMed and Raleigh Union Station, where it connects to Amtrak and the rest of the GoTriangle/GoRaleigh network.
- GoWake SmartRide — a fare-free, on-demand county rideshare serving Wendell, Zebulon, Knightdale, and the unincorporated areas between them. It's the same service on both sides of the town line.
Knightdale also has the GoRaleigh Route 33 local bus into downtown; Wendell's fixed-route lifeline is the ZWX. Either way, both towns are car-centric — plan on a vehicle per working adult — but the shared county transit makes the choice between them transit-neutral.
Home prices & taxes
On taxes these two are about as close as it gets. Wendell's town rate is $0.42 per $100 and Knightdale's is $0.44 (NCDOR 2024–2025), and both add the same Wake County rate of $0.5135. So Wendell's combined rate is a hair lower, but the difference on a typical home is small. Wendell held its rate flat at $0.42 for FY2025–26.
Home prices are broadly comparable, with a lot of new-construction inventory in both. Wendell's median home price was about $380K in 2025 (roughly $360K–$400K depending on month and source), and Wendell Falls in particular adds a steady supply of new homes. Compare live listings for your budget rather than averages.
Nearly a wash. Wendell's town rate is slightly lower, but the towns are close enough on cost that commute and community feel should drive the decision.
Schools
No difference at the district level: both Wendell and Knightdale are in the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS), the largest district in North Carolina, which uses a student-assignment system. You'll be assigned to different individual schools by address, but it's the same district, with the same magnet, year-round, and traditional-calendar options.
Wendell's WCPSS base schools include Wendell Creative Arts & Sciences Magnet Elementary, Lake Myra Elementary (inside Wendell Falls), Wendell Middle, and East Wake High. Confirm assignment by your exact address with the WCPSS lookup, and see our schools guide for details.
Town character
Wendell pairs a small, walkable historic downtown — incorporated in 1903, home to the long-running Wendell Harvest Festival — with the increasingly defining identity of Wendell Falls: a master-planned community with a town center, saltwater pool, dog park, and trails that has reshaped the town. It appeals to buyers who want brand-new, amenity-rich neighborhoods on the leading edge of growth.
Knightdale is a bit further along its growth curve, anchored by Knightdale Station Park and an established parks system, with more existing retail and a slightly shorter Raleigh commute. Get a feel for Wendell through things to do and the live dashboard.
The verdict
These are close cousins, so it's hard to go wrong:
- Pick Wendell if you want the newest master-planned neighborhoods (Wendell Falls), the energy of the fastest-growing town in the area, and you don't mind being a few minutes farther east.
- Pick Knightdale if you want to be a touch closer to Raleigh with more existing retail and parks already built out.
Either way you're in east Wake County and WCPSS, you share GoWake SmartRide and the ZWX corridor, and you're minutes apart. If Wendell's your lean, start with Moving to Wendell.
